The Top 5 Most Popular Car Makes in the US (2007)

The US car market is certainly fickle. Consumers can embrace a model one year, and all but ignore it the following year. But even so, there are a few automakers and specific car models that have remained popular with American buyers over for decades now. Most of these show up in this years list of the five most popular car models sold in the US, although a few newcomers have made the cut as well.

One might expect some of the iconic American brands to make the grade but all of the top
five models are from foreign automakers again this year. Perhaps surprisingly, all of the top cars are produced by the same two manufacturers: Toyota and Honda.

1. The Honda Civic

Honda has been near the top of the U. S. automobile market for many years now, and the humble civic is one of the reasons why. A so-called "entry level vehicle," the Civic has proven itself reliable and efficient for decades in the U. S., and word-of-mouth is largely responsible for the Civics' stellar reputation and runaway popularity with car buyers. As a company, Honda is rivaled only by Toyota in the area of customer satisfaction, making the Civic a safe bet for anyone looking for reliable transportation, and superb fuel efficiency.

2. The Toyota Camry

Toyota recently overtook General Motors as the largest auto manufacturer in North America, and the company’s Camry model has been a big part of that success. The Toyota Camry has sold well in the American market for decades and is consistently rated as one of the best mid-priced sedans available for the money. The Camry's excellent gas mileage and reputation for reliability make it a perennial favorite with car buyers.

3. The Honda CR-V

The CRV is Honda's economical and price-friendly suburban vehicle. With great gas mileage and space enough to satisfy even the busiest of soccer moms and dads, the CRV was an instant success in the American market. Since its first release, the Honda CRV has proven worthy of the Honda name, and has a reputation for reliability and comfort. And the spacious interior is perfect for growing families with kids and pets.

4 The Honda Accord

The Accord is Honda's answer to the Toyota Camry, and it comes in just a few places below it on this year’s list. As a mid-level car, the Camry has been popular for 20 years now, and shows no signs of letting up. Although the body shape has changed subtly over the years, the greatest improvements in the Accord over the past decade have been in the car's advanced electronic monitoring system, and its interior ergonomics. Like all Honda's, the Accord has a brilliant reputation with car buyers, and they have proven to hold their value well on the resale market. In all probability, we’ll be saying the Honda Accord on the top five car model list for a long, long time.

5. The Toyota Prius

The Prius is Toyota's flagship hybrid vehicle, and the first hybrid to make the top 5 list in the US. This newcomer became an instant success following its debut in 2003. Newer Prius models have further developed the hybrid technology, increasing fuel efficiency and comfort. And with a sticker price just slightly higher than the non-hybrid Toyota Camry or Honda accord, the Prius is an economical choice for families and individuals seeking a "greener" driving alternative.
